The Mattress and
Back Pain Connection
Did you know that when we sleep this is the only time that our muscles, ligaments, and tissues
have to rest? Because of this, it is important to maintain a healthy back and the best way to do this is make
sure that you are getting quality sleep on a good mattress. This is even more important
when you already have a back injury or spinal disorder.
Most of us go to bed each night without thinking twice about our back. We lay down in our bed and we like
to be comfortable and relaxed, but the mattress is all that is supporting our muscles and tissues while they
relax. Unfortunately, when we do not have a supportive mattress we end up with a back ache in the
morning. It’s no
wonder that many people wake up and want a new bed!
Choose a Better
Position
An unsupportive or worn out mattress is usually the cause of the back pain, but even if you have
a good mattress you might still be in pain.
You need to choose better sleeping positions that will give your body the support
that it needs.
The best position for sleep is flat on your back with a pillow under the
knees. The
position is great because it take the pressure off of the back allowing for complete and utter relaxation of
all of the tissues.
Pillows can be your friend when you are sleeping. If you tend to sleep on your side, you should
place a pillow between your legs.
This will help to take pressure off of the hips and the
spines. If
you sleep on your stomach you should place a small pillow under the stomach and hips to avoid placing undo
pressure on the lower back.
If you find that you have a lot of pain when you are standing or lying flat, you might want to
consider purchasing an adjustable bed.
These beds allow for you to elevate the head and the knees. For some people just sleeping in
an adjustable chair is a great way to deal with the pain short term until you can get an adjustable
pain.
