Pregnancy Back Pain:  The Cause

When most women dream of pregnancy they dream of being beautifully round and happy, awaiting the impending birth of their child.  What many women experience is completely different.  One of the things that changes the picture of pregnancy for most women is pregnancy back pain.  There are different causes of this pregnancy back pain, so women should not simply assume that the back pain is normal and ignore it.  The pregnancy back pain should at least be mentioned to their doctor so potential problems can be ruled out.

The Expanding Belly

The large, round belly is one of the first images that come to mind when you think of pregnancy but it is also the main cause of pregnancy back pain.  The reason for this is that the additional weight puts strain on your lower back.  The large belly also throws off the center of balance or gravity, which causes you to hold your body in a way that is not normal.  What this does is put increased pressure on the lower back, which results in that all too common pregnancy back pain.  At the same time that this is going on, during pregnancy the joints are more flexible, which may mean that there is even less support than normal.

There are also activities that can cause pregnancy back pain.  When you are pregnant you should be careful when you are twisting, bending over, or lifting as these are all actions that place more stress on the body.  Other activities that contribute to a sore back during pregnancy are walking, running, or using stairs.

Treatment Options

Pregnancy back pain is usually treated with exercise, as odd as that may sound!  The exercise is always appropriate for the stage of pregnancy.  You should talk to your health care professional about what the proper exercises are.  The exercise will differ from woman to woman, and will also depend on the severity of the back pain that is experienced.
