Lower Back Pain: Why
it Happens and What You Can Do
Back pain is not unknown to most people. In fact, at some
point in their lives, most people will experience lower back pain. The reason for this is that the lower back is
where the upper body and the lower body come together and your lower back is affected by just about every
movement. The lower back goes through a lot of
wear and tear, so it is understandable that when this area hurts, that your whole day is affected. The good news is
that there are plenty of remedies that will help you alleviate that pain and get back on your
feet.
Lower Back Pain At
Home Treatment
In most cases, lower back pain is caused by a strained
muscle, poor posture, or improper lifting. Luckily,
the strain from these things responds nicely to at home treatment. The first thing you need to do is take an over the counter
anti-inflammatory such as naproxen or ibuprofen as directed by the manufacturer. This will help to reduce swelling, which often is the main
contributor to the pain.
Next, you’ll want to apply a cold compress to the area every
two or three hours for the first two days. After this
period of time you will want to replace the cold compresses with a warm compress. During this time you will also want to rest your back as much as
possible. Don’t rest your back for more than two days
as this can actually make the injury worse. Slowly
work your way back into your normal routine after two days of full rest.
Talking to Your
Doctor
If after about a week you have not gotten any relief from
your lower back pain, you should put a call into the doctor. The doctor may be able to offer you other treatments such as
pain management medication, physical therapy, or even massages or acupuncture.
Your doctor will work with you based on your injury and the
severity of pain, to find a course of treatment that will get you back up and running sooner rather than
later. Some patients respond really well to one
treatment while others will not, so don’t give up if you find that one treatment doesn’t work well.
There are plenty of things out there for you and your doctor
to try so that you don’t have to live with the lower back pain for long.
