Living with
Chronic Back Pain
Unfortunately, most people will experience back pain at some point in their
lives. Most of
the time, people will experience back pain that is short lived and will resolve itself in the matter of a few days
by simply resting, applying heat and cold, and taking over the counter medications. While most people will
recover just fine, there is a small number of people who will continue to experience pain after these few
days. Those who
do not see an end to the pain are known to suffer from chronic back pain, and they will need to find alternative
therapies as well as coping mechanisms that will allow them to live with the pain.
To the dismay of those who suffer from chronic back pain, it often does not have a specific cause
and it may not have an effective cure.
Because the pain can go on and on, without a cause and without a cure, it is
important to get in touch with your doctor if you are experiencing back pain. Your doctor can help you manage
your pain effectively so you can begin to live your life again!
Treatment
Options
Luckily, there are many treatments for chronic back pain and most people will find that they are
effective in limiting the pain that they do experience. The first course of action in
treating chronic back pain is pain medication.
There are many over the counter medications that you can choose to take, but many of
them will not be safe or effective long term.
Many times doctors will prescribe antidepressants or an opioid for the treatment of chronic back
pain. Medication
may be combined with hot and cold therapies to help alleviate chronic back pain.
Exercise will be an important part of dealing with your chronic back
pain. Exercise may seem like an odd choice when you are in pain, but it will serve to strengthen
the muscles in your back and keep tension to a minimum.
You should always exercise with a trainer who understands your back problems so you don’t
exacerbate the problem through your workouts.
Your program might focus on stretching, flexibility, aerobic workouts, and strength
training.
There is not one treatment regimen that will treat all chronic back
pain. Most
people find that a combination of therapies helps them best. Your doctor will work with
you to indentify possible causes of your pain and also to tailor a program that will allow you to minimize
the pain as much as possible while continuing to live the life that you want to live.
