Back Pain Muscle Spasms - Causes and Treatment

Back pain muscle spasms are something that everyone will experience at least once in their life.   These spasms are not very comfortable and not something to look forward to, but they are an important part of the protection of the muscles in the body.  While painful, the back pain muscle spasms are meant to prevent damage to the muscles.

Causes of Back Pain Muscle Spasms

Depending on the person, back pain muscle spasms can be caused by many different things.  There are some very common causes such as:

Muscle trauma as caused by a car accident or fall

● Inflammation of the muscles caused by the overuse

● Repetitive strain caused by sitting or standing in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time.

Cures

There are many different ways to cure or treat the back pain muscle spasms that you experience, all in the comfort of your own home.  One of the best things that you can do is support your back muscles as much as possible.  You can support your back muscle by sleeping on a firm mattress, wearing a back brace during heavy lifting, and using a traction device.

Another way to treat back pain muscle spasms is with ice.  Ice can be used for three days to help ease the swelling.  If using ice, you should be sure that you do not apply it right to the skin.  The ice needs to be wrapped in a towel so it does not come in direct contact with the skin.  When the swelling has subsided you can then use heat packs to soothe the muscles.

Many people find that treating back pain muscle spasms with cranberry pills is very effective.  This is because the back pain that many people experience is related to kidney infections.  Yet another popular herb for this type of back pain is Du Huo Ji Shen.  White willow is also a great herb that can be used, and may even replace some over the counter pain medications.

If you are experiencing degenerative back pain you may want to consider taking supplements such as glucosamine, calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium.  Devil’s claw may be another herb worth trying as it is a natural anti-inflammatory.

A combination of all of these things or some of them will help to alleviate back spasms.  Everyone will find that a different combination of these treatments works best for them, so experiment a bit and see which of these natural back pain muscle spasm treatments works best for you.
